Nipah Virus Now Has Vaccination

A very dangerous virus that affects humans is called Nipah Virus which is a virus that comes from animals and affects humans. This type of virus attacks the RNA and causes many respiratory complications including cough, headaches and fever. There are more complications that can be reached form the disease which are very dangerous, ending in a coma.

As extreme as this virus is, there has not been a medicine nor a treatment for it which is what  makes it even more dangerous. This virus is widely found in areas including Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh and India. It is most commonly transmitted to humans from animals including bats or pigs.

This has forced many organizations and teams, including the World Health Organization to move forward in researchers trying to find a treatment for it before it affects large numbers of humans. A study led by the Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and his team from Jefferson Vaccine Center at Jeffenrson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University), Matthias J. Schnell, PhD holder, was able to develop a vaccine that might be effective. Dr. Schnell developed a vaccine called NIPRAB that has showed positive results when used against the virus.

Dr. Schnell commented on the results saying, “We have a vaccine that is safe and effective against Nipah, Hendra, and Rabies virus in mice. Future work will focus on testing the vaccine on different species and establishing the right dose of injection.”
